Consequences Of US Withdrawal From Afghanistan

As the decades of war between Afghanistan Taliban and US ended after the last military forces departed from Afghanistan on August 30, 2021, the situation of Afghan people worsened. The Taliban took over the country and announced their victory and that caused some serious problems for the Afghan people that include the weak government – which only worsened by the sudden departure of the president Ashraf Ghani and the extreme women rights situation in the country.

The Talibans - who are only good at fighting, are facing difficulties in handling the situation, maintaining peace and governing the country that is ruined through decades. According to Schroden from CNA “The Taliban have to show their capability to govern the country effectively which they were unable to do when they used to rule the state and also at their under controlled areas of the country”.

However, at many places they are credited with being good at maintaining the security situation, we cannot ignore the part that they lack a technocratic understanding of executing some other functions of the government. They will be struggling with economic and governance situations because they don’t have such revenue to spend on their people and this is one of the reasons why the hundreds of Afghans fear persecution under a Taliban regime and run to take asylum in different countries.

Besides the fragile government, the withdrawal has left many women vulnerable to the Taliban. Thousands of Afghans fear the women’s rights situation as there were several restrictions on women’s activities when they used to be in power before the US invasion. Females used to face gender-based discrimination and violence throughout the country.

During their rule, they used to thrashed women publically for not being accompanied with the Mehrum or not covering themselves fully when they ventured out of the house. Not only that, the female schools were closed, the educational and employment for them were constrained under Taliban rule. Moreover, there were a number of cases that say the Taliban used to abduct minor girls or forcefully marry them to their fighters.

Because of lack of confidence in the authorities and fearing reprisals, the cases of violence were under-report. According to one of the research done by the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC), “there was continuous failure on the investigation on more than 100 cases of murder reported during the year because sometimes the victims withdraw their report under the pressure from either communities or state officials or sometimes the negotiation method was used to resolve the issue. As a result, the cases from beating to killing surge with time”.

As now they are ruling the country women are seeing them in the same situations as they were during the taliban rule. Even though taliban announced the equal participation of women in every sector, most of the women still fear their freedom and they are protesting to gain their rights.

The humanitarian issues mentioned above are some of the problems that Afghans are facing there are tons of other so the international community has to take some action to ease their struggles. Although, the UN softens on the Taliban but that doesn’t mean that they have lifted the sanction – which is one of the causes of the worse economic situation of Afghanistan. UN and other international entities have to take action and provide support to reduce the crisis situation of Afghanistan and also help women to gain the freedom they want.
